Concerning the Impact of Geopolitical Conflict on Paramedics and Healthcare Workers

As organisations committed to the highest standards of emergency care and humanitarian principles, the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE) and the College of Paramedics (CoP) are united in expressing our deep sadness and concern over the ongoing harm and loss of life caused by global conflicts.

We are particularly moved by the recent loss of paramedics and healthcare professionals who have died or been injured while selflessly responding to the needs of others in areas of active conflict. These individuals represent the very best of our profession – providing impartial, lifesaving care under the most dangerous and challenging circumstances.

Both organisations uphold a stance of political neutrality in relation to global conflict. However, we are resolute in advocating for the protection and respect of paramedics and all medical personnel working in crisis zones. These professionals must be able to perform their duties free from violence, fear and obstruction.

The targeting of healthcare workers is not only a profound tragedy, but a violation of internationally recognised principles of medical neutrality and humanitarian protection.

We join Royal Colleges, the World Health Organisation, the United Nations and respected NonGovernmental Organisations in calling for an end to human suffering wherever it occurs, and we honour the memory of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. Their compassion, courage, and dedication are a testament to the core values of the paramedic profession.

We will continue to advocate for the safety, dignity and protection of all who deliver care in times of conflict.
