Responding to the Royal College of Emergency Medicine’s report today, Association of Ambulance Chief Executives Managing Director Martin Flaherty OBE QAM said:
The ambulance sector will welcome this important report which chimes with the messages of our own report published this week that showed the extent of harm being caused to patients by handover delays.
The urgent and emergency care system is facing unprecedented pressures which we are pleased have now been fully recognised by NHS England & Improvement and are being addressed head on.
New initiatives to end handover delays and improve the patient flow at emergency departments can only help reduce unnecessary harm to patients and reduce the impact this has on NHS ambulance staff and our colleagues in the acute hospital sector, who are significantly affected when their patients experience harm that we all agree can be prevented.
