Julian is an enthusiastic clinical strategist and leader, committed to whole system change to improve patient outcomes.  A believer in people, he applies professional and personal experience to support and develop others through coaching and mentoring relationships.

He was the Executive Medical Director for Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust (YAS) for 12 years until retirement in April 2025, having been employed by YAS from February 2007.  He chaired the National Ambulance Service Medical Directors group (NASMeD), a subgroup of the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE), from 2015 to 2021, through the development and introduction of the Ambulance Response Programme and the COVID-19 pandemic.  From June 2022 to October 2023 he was seconded to the NHS England central ambulance team as a medical advisor to the National Clinical Director for Urgent and Emergency Care, further developing the ambulance operational model to achieve the right outcome for patients.

He qualified in medicine from Leeds University in 1994 (BSc Hons, MB ChB) and holds the Diploma in Immediate Medical Care (DIMC) from the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2010).  He also holds a post graduate certificate in medical law from Northumbria University (2012).  In 2017 he was awarded Founding Senior Fellowship of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (SFFMLM).  He was awarded the Queen’s Ambulance Medal in the 2022 New Year’s Honours in recognition of his contribution to the ambulance sector.

His base clinical speciality was in Anaesthesia and he held the post of honorary Senior Staff Anaesthetist at Harrogate and District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust until April 2014, subsequently continuing to practice clinically in the ambulance service setting and as a member of the local BASICS scheme. He previously instructed and examined in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) and also instructed, examined and directed Resuscitation Council (UK) Advanced Life Support (ALS).

At weekends he can be found exploring the green lanes of North Yorkshire, or doing one of the many jobs required to maintain an upland smallholding.
