Ambulance leaders urge responsible World Cup celebrations

Ambulance leaders are appealing to the public to stay safe during the World Cup 2026 football tournament which kicked off this week.

Anna Parry Bio Pic June 2025 CROP SqAnna Parry, Managing Director of the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE), said:

“Ambulance services want everyone to enjoy the World Cup safely, and we would particularly encourage people to look after themselves and each other on the days when England and Scotland play their matches.

“Previous data for England shows that 999 call volumes can rise significantly in the hours after England World Cup games, and we are already answering around 29,000 calls a day across the UK. We therefore expect demand to increase at key moments during the tournament.

“Decisions on extended opening hours rest with local authorities and licensing bodies, and ambulance services will continue to monitor demand closely throughout the tournament.

“Ambulance crews will be working hard throughout the World Cup, with plans in place to ensure the right number of staff are on duty — including more crews available into the evening and overnight when many matches take place.

“We are asking the public to support us by using alternatives to 999 wherever appropriate — including NHS 111 online or by phone, or by speaking to a community pharmacist.

“Simple steps such as staying hydrated, planning ahead, and enjoying the football responsibly will help keep everyone safe. And as always, please only call 999 in a genuine emergency.

“We hope everyone enjoys the World Cup this summer.”
