Hard response time success wasted without outcome improvements

Association of Ambulance Chief Executives CEO Anthony Marsh has said that NHS reforms can be the catalyst for change needed to improve the unscheduled healthcare system in the UK.

Speaking at the Ambulance Service Institute mini-seminar at yesterday’s [22 Nov] Emergency Services Show, Dr Marsh told delegates that reforms provide a great opportunity to develop ambulance research and innovation with power assisted stretchers, 02 driven suction & 111 pilots all currently underway.

He suggested that a shift to hard response time targets has driven major improvements in care in this country but “getting there in 8 minutes doesn’t necessarily guarantee the best care”.

Dr Marsh added: “These are publicly driven targets so they are important for ambulance crews to work towards. But meeting hard response times is pointless without improvements in broader clinical care & patient outcomes.
