NHS England published the culture review of ambulance trusts on 15 February 2024. The review was commissioned in response to the first recommendation in the National Guardian Office’s speak up review into ambulance services, published in February 2023.
The review commented upon the vital work ambulance services do, as well as the deep-rooted cultural issues that exist. Its focus was on identifying the solutions that will make the biggest difference, as well as the problems, alongside consideration of the context ambulance services operate in.
The review acknowledged that cultural change takes time and commitment, and that the outcome of the review must not just be a tick box exercise.
Delivery board
The first meeting of the culture review delivery board took place on 16 April, and was attended by Minister Helen Whatley, who has provided oversight of the review, which will continue throughout its delivery phase.
Representatives from AACE and its membership were part of the review working group and now sit on the delivery board.
AACE is working with its national director groups and sub-groups, alongside colleagues from other organisations, such as the College of Paramedics, NHS England and NHS Employers, to map what work is currently ongoing in relation to the recommendation areas, and how that can be enhanced and improved to make the recommendations a reality.
