The volume offers critical insights into the theory and practice of strategic and operational management of ambulance services and the leadership needs for the service. Contributors to the project range from academics, senior leaders, managers and staff of NHS ambulance trusts, experts from professional organisations such as the College of Paramedics, AACE and NARU and international experts. The authors provide critical insights on topics such as historical origins of the service, interoperability, management of risks, service modernisation, equality & diversity, ambulance cultures, management of demand, leadership development and future direction of travel both in the UK and abroad. The sixteen chapters are based in the practical experiences of the authors and are written in a way that is accessible and suitable for a range of audiences. The book caters to a wider audience to inform policy and practice, both in the UK and abroad.

Dr Anthony Marsh, Chair of AACE said:

The project is a good example of research collaboration between ambulance service leaders and academics who share a strong interest in future of our ambulance services.”

Professor Wankhade said:

The pressures of aging population, demographic changes, other socio-cultural factors and the changing role of the ambulance services in the wider healthcare networks are all challenging the traditional ambulance delivery. The book addresses some of the key management challenges confronting the modern ambulance services.”
